RaySearch Laboratories and ADAC Announces Clinical Release of its Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) Software. June 13, 2001 ADAC, a Philips Medical Systems company, today announced that it has released P3IMRT¤, ADAC's Inverse Planning Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) software for its Pinnacle3 radiation therapy planning product. IMRT is a new technique that allows doctors to more accurately deliver radiation treatment for their cancer patients. With ADAC's new software, clinicians can more precisely tailor the treatment dose to match the target tumor, while sparing the surrounding normal tissue, a process that was much more difficult with conventional techniques. IMRT enables the radiation oncologist to escalate the dose to the tumor while minimizing treatment-related complications. P3IMRT provides compatibility with all major linear accelerators for precise treatment delivery using computer-controlled intensity modulation of the radiation beams. This may ultimately lead to improved local tumor control. "With the release of P3IMRT, ADAC's Radiation Therapy Products business continues to provide leading-edge clinical solutions for evolving cancer management. We believe that the clinical use of P3IMRT will be rapidly adopted by radiation oncology facilities, and particularly by our large Pinnacle3 installed base," stated Gary Burbach, CEO of ADAC. The new software is based on ORBIT (Optimization of Radiation Therapy Beams by Iterative Techniques), an advanced software tool used to optimize radiation therapy planning developed at RaySearch Laboratories AB, based in Stockholm, Sweden. ORBIT provides physicians the potential to be both more precise and more aggressive than with current treatments. Future developments will enable the radiation oncologist to design an optimal treatment plan based on the probability of achieving complication-free tumor control while accounting for treatment uncertainties due to organ motion, treatment setup errors, and variations in patient sensitivity to radiation therapy.
